Judging Standards

I.P.M.S. GUNDAM JUDGING STANDARDS

GUNDAM MODEL JUDGING CRITERIA

Gunpla are plastic models, and conventional Basic Modeling Skills are required to produce an acceptable representation of these fighting suits.

They are no different from conventional scale models -

FIT, FINISH AND PRESENTATION ARE CRITICAL COMPONENTS OF JUDGING.

Out of Box Builds

JUDGING BASED ON AN ASSESSMENT OF CONSTRUCTION & FINISH SKILLS

Models should not display evidence of the following construction issues:

  • Glue marks

  • Visible nubs

  • Uneven sanding

  • Gaps (improper fit issues)

  • Surface imperfections (unintentional)

  • Poor seam treatment (unintentional)

Allowances

  • Basic panel line treatments are allowed, but must be consistently applied.

  • Models should have a uniform non-paint finish, without unintentional flaws.

  • Kit-supplied stickers and/or decals are acceptable, but must be applied well.

  • Parts such as gun barrels or exhausts may be drilled out.

  • Static poses are allowed - but shouldn’t detract from the overall presentation.

Custom Builds & Dioramas

JUDGING BASED ON CONSTRUCTION, FINISH AND PRESENTATION

Overall Construction is expected to be free of the imperfections listed in the Out of Box category.. Models should not display evidence of the following finish issues:

  • Uneven or messy paint

  • Visible brush strokes

  • Uneven tone (unintentional)

  • Untreated panel lines

  • Decal silvering

  • Inconsistent application

  • Weathering, battle damage and/or advanced finishing techniques should be performed with skill, and be applied consistently over the entire model.

  • Modifications or enhancements, whether after-market or scratch-built, should be carried out with skill, and improve the overall look of the original kit.

  • The pose should take advantage of the design capabilities of the model.

The overall presentation should enhance the impact of the model - poor or unimaginative presentation may reduce overall score.
